Fin and Rudder joint

Posted on Updated on

Made progress this weekend. Drilled the holes in the hinge blocks.

Cut out another hinge so I could assemble the fin and rudder hinge. That’s when I realized none of the hardware is labeled. This gauge that was in the kit helped me figure out what bolts are the AN3-11a needed to mount the hinges.

Gathered up the hardware.

Filed the washers to fit inside the spar.

Now I have a complete set of hardware to mount the rudder.

Next I drilled the holes through the fin spar for the hinge bolts. Aligned the fin and rudder spar to transfer the holes ensuring precise alignment.

Assembled everything to see if it all lines up properly.

Cut the RS-2 pieces that help fill in the gap between the fin and rudder. You can see the extra hole I drilled by mistake.

Notice that the gap for the hinges not centered. The larger gap on the top is to leave room to install the hinge pin.

Finally I whipped up a batch of T-88 epoxy and started gluing everything together.
